Why Christianity?

Many many years ago, after returning from church one Sunday morning, an ex girl-friend of mine asked me,”Why do you believe in God?"

A little startled, I gave a rather clumsy spiel of how much Jesus loves us, and how much we need Him in our lives.  I then asked her why she doesn't believe in God - to which she replied;

"Well, I have a nice job, great friends, a lovely house, and a wonderful family. Not really sure what I need Him for."

The honesty of her answer was such that I decided it was probably best to leave her be.

But her reply really made me think. It made me wonder why, if at all, Christianity would appeal to people; particularly in what was becoming a more and more secular European society.

So why would someone who is genuinely a good and loving person want to be a Christian? Especially when we Christians are at times not so loving, and not so good. Now when I say 'good', I'm not talking about 'sinless' (nobody is sinless), I'm talking about doing good things for other people etc.

This could so easily turn into a long article. But I know you're busy so I'll keep it short.

Christianity is about love, forgiveness, compassion, mercy, and kindness - to those around you, and to the world at large.

It is the slandering and unforgiving attitude that people witness amongst us Christians that is probably so off-putting.

So let's focus less on the do's and don'ts - the regulations and the doctrines - the observing and the judging; and focus a lot more on the characteristics of Jesus Himself.

Unconditional Love

Forgiveness

Mercy

Compassion

Encouraging One Another

It is by so doing that we can best encourage others to give Christianity a try.
